A few known issues and workarounds for them

Since upgrading the teach.cs labs to a newer version of OS, we wanted to let you know that there are a few issues that we are aware of, and are working to resolve.

  • Printing PDF files on the command line with the “lpr” command used to hang the printer. We implemented a temporary patch by discarding any PDF files from the queue. To print the PDF files from the command line please use the “print” command (which converts PDF to Postscript before sending it to the printer) or print using Okular PDF viewer.
  • Semi-automatic mounting of the USB keys currently is broken. We are working on fixing this. In the meantime you can mount your USB keys using the “pmount” command (and unmount using “pumount”). To use pmount you need to know the device name for your USB key’s partition. A simple way to determine it is to run “dmesg” and look at the end of the output. Normally the first partitoin of a USB key will be named /dev/sdb1. So, to mount it, you would type “pmount /dev/sdb1”. USB key mounting now works.
  • Some people are experiencing a “blue screen” hang after a login into a teach.cs workstation. To fix the issue, SSH into your teach.cs account and type “kdedefaults”. This will reset the configuration for your graphical interface, which, in our experience, fixes the “blue screen” issue.
  • Also, a quick reminder that you can solve your teach.cs account issues by logging into a teach.cs workstation using user name “account” and password “account” (without the quotes). This will launch a web browser that will take you to https://www.teach.cs.toronto.edu/pc for the web-base account management operations.
