Participate in a Research Study about Python Error Messages

Researchers at the University of Adelaide have asked us to invite you to participate in this study.

Project title: Utilising Stack Overflow to Provide Enhanced Compiler Error Messages

We’re a team of researchers from the University of Adelaide in Australia, and we’re trying to make the lives of Python developers easier by producing better compiler error messages. We have developed a plugin that is integrated with the popular Sublime Text editor to provide enhanced compiler error messages for Python. This plugin automatically queries Stack Overflow and provides summarised information within the IDE. We would now like to test this plugin with Python developers as part of a user study. If you’re willing to participate, please submit your email address at https://tinyurl.com/better-python-errors or contact Emillie Thiselton at emillie.thiselton@student.adelaide.edu.au to set up a study session.

All that is needed to participate is very basic knowledge of the Python language as well as some software development experience and the ability to communicate effectively in English. As a participant in this study, you will be required to attend one remote study session of 60 minutes where you will attempt to complete several programming tasks, and answer a few interview questions before, during, and after working on these tasks. The observation period will be a ‘think-aloud’ activity, where you will be asked to voice your thoughts as they come to you as you proceed with your programming tasks. An audio and screen recording will be taken for the duration of this experiment. Sessions will take 60 minutes at most and can be flexibly scheduled over the next few weeks.

Kind regards,
Emillie Thiselton and Christoph Treude
